After reading two articles by the ever amazing Olivia Gude, we were assigned to post some topics or themes we think high school students would be "into." I used to think I had that down, but, to be honest, in the five years that I have been out of high school, I have already seen an extreme change in dynamics. However, I do believe the general idea is the same. But first, in Gude's articles, I wanted to mention a few things I liked. She wrote about how, in classrooms, teachers can be helping and hindering students in their creative process. While it is definitely important to teach technical skills and aesthetics, it is also important to stand back and let the creative juices flow in students. In order for them to find meaning behind what they are doing, they have to be invested in the subject. And lets just be perfectly clear here, I found no meaning behind painting some fruit, drawing a deer skeleton, or making some clay tiles. Furthermore, she talks about allowing students to explore new possibilities in their day to day lives, personal identities, communities, and so on; experiences they usually pay no mind to. Granted, if teachers just said, "Here's some stuff! Make something," most students would have no idea where to even start. It is because of this that I have put a large amount of consideration into subjects and themes that I think adolescent students would find meaningful or relate well with.
