National Art Honors Society 2018-2021
SadIn 1978, the National Art Education Association began the NAHS program to inspire and recognize students who have shown an outstanding ability and interest in art. The program supports members in their efforts to attain the highest standards in art scholarship, character, and service and to bring art education to the attention of the school and community.
When I came to Lehman, our NAHS chapter was barely there. To be honest, I didn't even know what it was. The first day I met the other art teachers, I was informed my position usually sponsored NAHS and that I would be inheriting some officers. I immediately started researching and was super excited to get started, but as the "new teacher" it didn't come without its challenges. On our first officer meeting, the six officers came to my classroom and started discussing plans for meetings and such, which was great! The only problem was... THEY COMPLETELY LEFT ME OUT! Seriously! Backs to me and everything! Luckily, with time and some well placed humor, we were able to change that pretty quick.
Over the three years I have been at Lehman, I, with the help of my student officers, have been able to grow and develop NAHS. Not only has our membership vastly increased, we have started to become an active and successful part of the LHS campus. In our three years together, we have completed several fundraisers (which help us put on our induction ceremony and give our seniors scholarships), sponsor or co-sponsored several events (Youth Art Month celebration, haunted house/trunk or treat, spring festival), started a mural/garden project on campus, created and participated in several community service projects, and went on several field trips (to a museum, sculpture garden, and to the renaissance festival).
Sadly, due to COVID, we haven't been able to do as much this year as we normally do, but I am hoping, as things return to normal, NAHS will continue to grow and thrive on the LHS campus!
