Day 5 was my last day at Spiva. It was both exciting and sad for me. Throughout the time I had spent there, I had really gotten to know many of volunteers and staff members and felt I had grown so much by what I had been learning. This day was really neat as well because one of the art teachers from the Joplin school district was able to spend the whole day with us. Much like the university art teacher, I had the wonderful opportunity to speak with her about her own classroom and the methods of teaching she used in it.
As all of my original team had returned, Karalee was able to run the secret room again and I was able to stay in the classroom with the art teacher. The students obviously liked her a lot and, although they showed me a lot of respect, acted towards her the way the students had acted toward me the last day I was there. She was very kind, patient, and encouraging to them, and did a wonderful job helping me to keep them on task.
All of the sessions went smoothly, much like the first day... until the very end. As, up to that point I thought I had escaped the horid sickness traveling around, I was thrilled. Then it hit me. By my fourth session, I was feeling extremely ill. Thankfully, another volunteer had joined us in the classroom and allowed me time to sit. While being sick is no fun at all, I was happy that it decided to hit me at the very end and allowed me to do my very best all the days before.
All in all, I had a great time being there and learned SOOO much!! I would suggest the experience to anyone!
